DAY 1: ARRIVAL

You arrive in Kirkenes, located at 70 degrees north, right on the border with Russia. In fact, Kirkenes is as far east as Istanbul. From Kirkenes Airport, you travel toward Varanger, and we recommend a stop at Bugøynes for a bite to eat along the way.

At the innermost part of Varangerfjorden, you will meet Edgar at Varanger Lodge for check-in and accommodation.

DAY 2: KING CRAB

A day at your leisure in Varanger. One of the highlights is joining Edgar out at sea on his fishing boat. In the 1960s, Soviet biologists introduced the Kamchatka crab into a fjord near Murmansk. By the 1970s, the king crab had established itself in Norwegian waters, and today Varangerfjorden is full of this world-famous delicacy. You will help pull up traps filled with king crabs.

In the evening, the day’s catch is prepared using local ingredients. You won’t get it any fresher than this!

DAY 3: VARANGER LODGE

After breakfast, we suggest a visit to Skakkerud Reindeer. This is a sustainable experience where you can meet reindeer, learn the unique stories of the animals kept in enclosures for the winter, and feed them reindeer lichen.

It is also possible to visit the Witch Monument in Vadsø and learn about its history.

End the day with a sauna and an ice bath before enjoying dinner.

DAY 4: KARASJOK

After a leisurely breakfast and check-out from Varanger, continue your journey to Karasjok. About 90% of the local population here speak Sámi, and the Sámi Parliament, shaped like a traditional Sámi lavvu, is also located in the town.

You will stay at Engholm Husky Lodge, designed and built by the owner, Sven. Each cabin is uniquely decorated with interiors crafted by Sven.

Your closest neighbors are the 50 huskies in the kennel. Spend the afternoon greeting the dogs and enjoying the tranquility of the forest, or explore the area on your own with snowshoes. In the evening, there’s naturally the chance to watch the Northern Lights dance across the sky.

DAY 5: DOG SLEDDING

Start the day with a hearty breakfast – today you’ll be a mush for a day!

Head to the kennel and receive a card with the names of the dogs that will join you on the ride. The harnesses are already in place, and your task is to match each dog with its harness. In this way, you help prepare the team for the adventure.

Once the team is ready, you lift off and glide through the forest, along rivers, and maybe up into the mountains. Along the way, stop for a warm lunch by the fire. Back at the kennel, the dogs are unhitched and settled back in their kennels.
