DAY 1: ARRIVAL AT HJERKINN

Arrive at Hjerkinn by train or car and check in at the historic Hjerkinn Fjellstue, a family-run lodge for 14 generations. Outside, 50 Icelandic horses graze peacefully.

Hjerkinn is centrally located in the mountain region, making it an ideal base to explore the surroundings either on foot or on horseback.

DAY 2: MUSK OX SAFARI

Start the day with a hearty breakfast and pack a lunch.

Today is all about the musk ox safari. Join Sigbjørn or another guide from Oppdal Safari for a guided walk in Dovrefjell. A respectful distance to a musk ox is 200 meters. Reintroduced to Dovre in 1932, the musk ox population here makes it one of the best places in the world to see these magnificent animals. During the safari, you may also spot reindeer, moose, and Arctic foxes. The tour lasts about five hours.

Fun fact: Hjerkinn Fjellstue is the only place in the world that offers musk ox safaris on horseback.

DAY 3: EXPLORE THE MOUNTAINS

Enjoy a refreshing breakfast.

Today, explore Dovrefjell on horseback or on foot. Consider a trip to Snøhetta Viewpoint for breathtaking panoramas.

Hjerkinn Fjellstue is also known for guided Icelandic horse rides, suitable for both beginners and experienced riders.

DAY 4: DEPARTURE

After breakfast, it’s time to check out and continue your journey home.
